Framing the Future

How Abande Mthembu is Redefining South African Cinema and Style

Story By MONDAYS MAG I Featuring  Abande Mthembu/Exclusive Story

The Quiet Visionary from KwaZulu-Natal

Born in Durban to hardworking teacher parents, Abande Mthembu describes his journey into the creative arts as anything but straightforward. Self-identifying as an ambivert, he admits to appearing reserved at first glance. "To those who do not know me, I may appear quiet, but I value peace and take care in how I present myself," he explains. Yet, beneath this calm exterior is a multifaceted creative powerhouse determined to be distinctive, wild, and unforgettable in his craft.

From a Smartphone to the Director’s Chair

His artistic awakening sparked in high school, armed with nothing but a Samsung J1 and an intuitive eye for composition. What started as editing Instagram photos quickly evolved into a profound passion for motion. “I have always believed that video can preserve memory more effectively than a single photograph,” he shares. Today, Abande is not just capturing moments; he is actively studying the cultural impact of media. Working with VOW 88.1 FM further sharpened his technical prowess, providing practical experience that elevated his cinematic approach and prepared him to build a sustainable empire through his production company, SPXDES MEDIA.

The Cinematic Eye and the Subtext of Style

For Abande, directing is a delicate balance of ambitious vision and technical collaboration. He thrives in storyboarding and cinematography, meticulously planning every emotion before the camera even rolls. "I am always asking, 'What is the frame communicating that the dialogue is not?'" he notes, emphasizing his obsession with lighting, negative space, and unspoken body language. This hyper-awareness seamlessly bleeds into his love for fashion. Inspired by the tailored youthfulness of Tyler, The Creator and A$AP Rocky, Abande views personal style as a vital form of visual communication. Fans can explore his captivating "Outfit of the Day" videos and striking portfolio on his Instagram.

Conquering the Camera, Both Behind and In Front

While he commands the set as a director, modeling has been equally transformative, significantly elevating his posture and self-assurance. "In modeling, I am in front of the camera. In filmmaking, I am behind the scenes, taking responsibility and working with the entire crew," he says, embracing the duality of both disciplines. Early on, a lack of capital threatened his vision, but he refused to wait for ideal circumstances. Borrowing his older brother’s camera, he rallied friends who believed in his dream, proving that resilience trumps resources. Balancing these rigorous shoots with his university studies requires immense discipline, but he tackles both with unwavering dedication.

Dreaming Globally, Acting Locally

Abande’s ambitions stretch far beyond Johannesburg. If granted limitless resources, he dreams of directing a sci-fi biographical epic infused with Christian themes of destiny and purpose. Currently, he is crafting his longest film to date a suspenseful love story while juggling upcoming modeling shoots, including a highly anticipated vintage inspired project. To the next generation of South African creatives, his advice is piercingly clear: "Do not wait for ideal conditions, as they rarely arise," he urges. "Those who succeed are not always the most talented. They are those who persevered during periods of uncertainty." With this mindset, Abande Mthembu is undoubtedly building an enduring, globally recognized legacy.
