From shared passion to powerful sound

Inside the rise of DJ duo EVOKE By: Ntombizodwa Dlamini

What started as a shared love for DJing has grown into a promising musical partnership for rising duo EVOKE, whose sound is rooted in emotion, culture and connection. The pair say the idea to work together came naturally. The said that they both had the same creative outlook and that their early conversations about music quickly evolved into collaboration As their sound developed, choosing a name became an important step in defining their identity.“We kept coming back to EVOKE. The word means to bring out or stir up emotions, memories, and feelings,” they say. “As DJs, our goal is to create moments that people genuinely feel.” Both artists bring influences from different parts of Gauteng. One draws from Pretoria’s Bacardi scene, while the other’s roots lie in the Vaal, known for soulful house and local rap. Their move to Johannesburg marked a turning point in their musical journey.

“Johannesburg is an exceptionally diverse city,” they say. Exposure to different cultures and sounds introduced them to Afro-beat and Afro Tech, expanding their creative direction. “Attending events and seeing how genres are blended inspired us.” Their shared taste in music has played a key role in shaping their identity as a duo. Evoke duo continued to say that as they share a passion for the same genres, they then decided to collaborate from the beginning, when together they seamlessly blend their individual sounds, Amapiano, House music and Afro into a cohesive mix. “our styles complement one another, and this harmony enables us to consistently produce a polished, club-ready sound,” they said.

They went on to describe their sound as “deep and vibrant hypnotic grooves”, the duo say their focus is on creating an immersive experience. “In practice, It’s about carefully layering Amapiano, House and Afro sounds to build energy and keeping the floor moving, blending textures, rhythms, and melodies in a way that reflects the connection and energy we aim to evoke in every perfomance” they added. However, their approach is not rigid. EVOKE pride themselves on versatility, often adjusting their sets depending on the crowd and event. “Some events are purely Amapiano, while others mix Amapiano with Afro-beat or Afro Tech,” they say.“Our aim is to cater to different audiences while staying true to our sound.”While they collaborate closely, they also value individuality.“We don’t write lyrics together,” they note. “We each bring our own ideas, guided by a shared vision.”

Performing across different venues has helped refine their craft. “Every crowd is different, and each experience has contributed to our growth,” they say. Taking their music beyond South Africa has come with challenges, particularly when adapting to international audiences. “Some countries prefer faster-paced rhythms with more live elements,” they explain. “We had to find a balance between staying true to ourselves and connecting with different audiences.”Despite this, the response abroad has been overwhelmingly positive.  “The reception has been incredible, often more energetic than what we experience locally,” they say. Looking ahead, the duo have their sights set on major global stages. “Headlining at Ibiza and Nigeria’s Dirty December festival is the dream,” they share.  “That’s when we’ll know we’ve made it.”

Over the next five years, EVOKE hope to collaborate with leading artists and continue expanding their reach. “We want to create music that speaks to diverse audiences while staying authentic,” they say the heart of it all is their intention to create meaningful experiences. “We want our set to be an escape… a moment where people can forget their worries and just enjoy,” they add. The duo also have a few constants that keep them grounded, including their love for certain tracks. “We never get tired of playing Zambuk,” they say. Before every performance, they take a moment to centre themselves. “We pray before stepping onto the decks,” they share, a simple ritual that reflects their focus and purpose.
