Dynamic Duo: Uncle D and Baby XSA

Another hot, blazing performing artists in Durban? In the vibrant heart of South Africa's music scene, a new flame has been lit. Durban has birthed countless talents, but few have captured the raw energy and authentic storytelling quite like Uncle D and Baby XSA.

The Roots: Where It All Began

The duo behind the viral hit "ITHINA" are not just artists—they're a movement, a force, and above all, a story of passion meeting purpose.. Hailing from Ellovu, Durban, Uncle D, whose real name is Mhleli Chiliza, grew up immersed in a rich musical culture. "Where I come from, I was surrounded by many artists... They are the guys who inspired me a lot to make music," he reflects. His upbringing, marked by the harsh realities of township life including gang violence and personal challenges, shaped the emotional depth of his music. Today, his lyrical style seamlessly weaves IsiZulu and English, a nod to his roots and a tribute to his idol, Okmalumkoolkat. "He's the one who inspired me to rap more in my home language, which is IsiZulu, and add a little flavor with English," Uncle D explains.

Enter Baby XSA: A Young Visionary

Meanwhile, in Pietermaritzburg, a young talent was already emerging. Baby XSA, born Ntuthuko Mkhize, started making music at just 11 years old, heavily influenced by the music his older siblings played around the house. "I grew up being around my older siblings who listened to hip-hop a lot... I saw that music heals and is therapeutic," he says. Baby XSA's music draws from both local and international influences—Travis Scott, Gunna, and Drake among them. It's this fusion of sounds and ambitions that shapes his evolving artistry. "Drake is so multi-talented; he can sing, rap, and tell stories at the same time. That's the type of artist I want to grow and be," he admires.

In an Interview with the Mondays Mag, the duo shared that they met in early 2024 through Instagram and quickly collaborated on "ITHINA." "We were coming from a gig, and we were like, 'Let's do a song together.' That's how 'ITHINA' came to life," Uncle D recalls. Baby XSA adds, "We didn't expect it to go viral as it is. We're just grateful that our supporters are gravitating towards it and they like it."

Beyond the Beat: A Mission with Meaning

Uncle D's music aims to inspire people from townships to become the best versions of themselves. "80% of my music I make for people like me who come from townships...

I hope to inspire them to become the best versions of themselves," he shares. Baby XSA is ambitious about cementing his name as one of the greatest in the industry. "I'm very ambitious about cementing my name because I'm a guy who loves leaving his mark on everything I do," he says.

What Makes Them Stand Out

Their shared authenticity, passion for music, and drive to tell meaningful stories set them apart from many rising stars in the industry. They embrace who they are and where they come from, and it resonates with audiences who crave sincerity over flash. With "ITHINA," they've proven that music rooted in truth and creativity can break barriers—both cultural and commercial. The duo's chemistry is palpable, their ambitions loud and clear.

As they continue to push boundaries and break through the noise, their story is still unfolding. But one thing is certain: this is only the beginning. Uncle D and Baby XSA have not only found their voices—they've given others a reason to find theirs. Their rise is a testament to the magic that happens when talent meets opportunity, and when authenticity isn't sacrificed for popularity. In an industry often dominated by fleeting trends, the duo's commitment to staying true to their message.
