Zani Sizani Unveils ‘For Play

After a quiet stretch since her debut project Started, singer-songwriter Zani Sizani returns with a sultry, soul-soaked EP titled For Play, a body of work that is as intimate as it is intentional. The Gqeberha-born artist shared with the Mondays about the inspiration behind the project, her creative evolution, and why trusting her instincts was the boldest move she has made yet.

Zani Sizani made her project on 2020 of which she says she was waiting for the right time to release the 6-track EP. “I was always waiting for the right time to release new music and to have the perfect set of circumstances but when I realized that wasn’t always possible, I decided to just go for it and start putting the project together,” says Zani

That decision sparked the birth of For Play, a six-track EP that blends R&B, alternative textures, and what she calls “lover girl storytelling.” It is a project rooted in vulnerability, sensuality, and the thrill of emotional risk — all wrapped in Zani’s signature melodic vocals.

I am sure when you hear the word For play you think foreplay, this EP is just a romance its self, I bet you will find yourself fantasizing or even hallucinating over this EP. In a few words the EP is just a cheeky double entendre. Compared to her debut album Started, which introduced her as a fearless new voice, and knew very little how things worked in the music industry. Zani shares that her releasing of the album was unplanned and spontaneous, but as for this EP, everything is into place.

With For Play, the growth is undeniable. “This time, I knew what I wanted to say. I knew how I wanted to sound. Every part of this project was intentional. It is a labor of love and faith, and I am so proud of it.” Zani is a true definition of A Global Sound with local Roots, one of the standout features of For Play is its sonic diversity. She has worked with producers from Berlin, Seattle, Abidjan, and South Africa, creating a hybrid of R&B and House that feels both global and grounded.

“I love working with artists from other parts of the world. I have been lucky enough to work with producers based in Berlin, Seattle, Abidjan, and incredible South African producers who are all instrumental in my growth.,” she says.  “The sound international influences bring to my music is very unique and allows me to experiment with my vocal and melodic choices.” Despite the international influences, Zani’s South African identity remains central. “I do not overthink it. If a beat calls for a certain sound, I follow it. It is all about what feels right.”

Queer Crushes, Femininity, and Fun

At its core, For Play is about connection especially the kind that is messy, magnetic, and deeply human.  “I explore the passion and excitement behind a crush,”  “Specifically queer crushes, which are just like any other, but often come with extra layers. That is a whole other interview,” Zani is not slowing down. She is currently planning a listening session and exhibition with her band, The ArcSound. “My live sound is a whole other experience and I can’t wait for people to understand my full band and hear the talented people I work with.”

As for what is next? “I am just going to keep doing. I trust my vision now. I am not afraid to put myself out there.”Zani’s message to up-and-coming creatives is simple but powerful: “Do the work and share it. Be confident in what you are doing and do it as raw as possible so people can celebrate who you are. Your passion and talent will only translate through genuine authenticity.” With For Play, Zani Sizani is not just releasing music she is inviting us into her world. And if this project is any indication, it is a world worth exploring.❤
